CLEAN YAMUNA PROJECT – MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT & FOREST

First Steps

 

The first step in Avacayam’s outward journey was the “Clean Yamuna Temple Flower” sponsored by the Ministry of Environment and Forests to sensitize and educate 1,00,000 able and disabled school students in NCR Delhi about the toxic effects of floral discards in the river. The program was intensely experiential.

This two-year program worked with students from regular and special schools through:

  • Yamuna Shramdaans (Manual cleaning of the river banks)
  • Paryavaran Haat (Cultural performances and Installations related to nature)
  • Eco-Tarang (Monthly newsletter on the environment distributed to Eco-Clubs in 5 Northern States)
  • Eco-club activities (with a focus on the state of the river and recycling activities)

Thereafter, for the next five years – 2008 to 2013, the Department of Environment supported the spread of Awareness and Action of the Avacayam Initiative in NCR Delhi, mentoring Society for Child development in involve all special schools in this very important and mainstream agenda.

WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE

In 2008, when the Avacayam Project was granted its first grant by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, this film was made by Dr. Madhumita Puri to bring awareness regarding floral discards and to encourage its reuse into consumer friendly products.
